If you are not able to see the work that gets shown in the Nikon Salon due to lack of time or “hemisphere issues” (being in the wrong one) then bookmark this: The Independents
The best of what is featured here is to me what Japanese photography is so exciting- there is this sense of passion in the best of what you’ll find, a feeling that runs counter to (compliments?) the whole current American and European photo student deadpan/documentary scene. (Interestingly enough, if you know what to look for, you can tell which of the featured photographers studied photography in America- take a guess and then check the their profile to be sure.)
I was able to see most of the exhibitions in person, and the chance to see「彼女のタイトル」(#27) again is wonderful. I also recommend #26, #36 and of course, #37. I took the profile picture for that one.

Went in to the Nikon Salon at 1pm to mat the pictures (flat atop the correct size of paper stuck down with tape) and left around 7. Also spent about 30 minutes taking time to walk from the 28th floor of the Shinjuku L Tower and underground to the Sekaido mega art supply shop on the other side of Shinjuku for 2 sheets of paper. Thought I had enough cut last weekend.
A Tuesday evening in the Nikon Salon is a pretty busy time- two shows are taken down while two more are being put up. Onishi sensei showed up and his help and encouragement (enthusiasm) helped quite a bit. He also gave me the very first copy of his new book that comes out tomorrow, but that will be a future blog post.
The show looks good, prints seem ok, we (Onishi, Nagamachi, Tanaka, and the guy who physically hangs the work) figured out the best layout for the photos using the frames and wall space available. Despite the time spent over the past few weeks planning, we ended up with less wall space than I figured, hence the two level arrangement on the south wall. Can’t thank them enough.
