editing

Filed under: darkroom — John @ 9:22 pm

I’ve finally caught up on my film development and spent Saturday evening in the darkroom making contact sheets of negatives shot since the end of July. I think there’s about eighty sheets of photo paper there. Due to the rise in pricing by Oriental for these contact sheets I went with the cheapest choice here in Tokyo, Kentmere VC Select RC based paper in a 12 x 9.5 inch (30.5cm x 24cm) size. Good stuff.

The thing I like most about editing contact sheets is how similar it is to the act of photography itself. Re-selection, a chance to catch it again, it’s part of how it all becomes an “adventure in seeing“, indeed.

  1. I really enjoy your posts about working in the darkroom. Your posts over the past few months have helped simplify my editing process and I appreciate it a lot.

I’ve also started working in “batches”…roughly 30 rolls at a time. Looking through contact prints of a body of work rather than selecting favorite images every week has really helped me understand my work as a whole which has allowed me to find more patterns and ideas I never saw before.

    Thanks,
    Jeff

  5. Yodobashi Camera in Shinjuku- the 6th Floor of their Camera building. It comes in packs of 50 sheets and is the cheapest of all the photo paper brands that they stock.
