Drag/Drug

Filed under: General — John @ 6:16 pm

You Nebraskans got to back me up here.

“Drug” is an acceptable way of saying “Dragged”, right? This came up in a conversation with a very professional and often right (east coaster) English teacher.

You can say it like this :
“The dog drug the baby across the floor”

“The dog got drug behind the car for a mile”

“I got drug along to a jazz festival last weekend”

or something like that.

THIS IS YOUR CHANCE TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE. WILL YOU ANSWER THE CALL?

Also, I am the only one at my school who calls it “Pop”.

  1. “I drug him with me to the store” is a perfectly acceptable sentence.

“Pop”, however, is just plain wrong.

  2. “The movie A.I. just drug on too long” is also ok (but not that film)

Wrong or not, POP is indeed what I am teaching my 9th grade “Soon To Be In Nebraska” students in English class. Not because they need to call it that, but because they ought to be ready to know what Nebraskans are saying when they use that word…

  3. The truth of the drag/drug debate is that both are, indeed, correct. However, if you look them up in the Oxford English Dictionary, you’ll notice that the word “drug” (for the usage you describe) is marked obsolete, but there is a note that the word is “still in use in certain regional dialects.”

    So there you have it!

  4. it pretty much goes both ways. as for “pop,” i’ve always used “soda.” but in Nebraska that’s the odd way to say it. it’s definitely pop around here.

  5. In Montana, we never say soda, only pop. Calling it soda marks you as being from back east.

  6. There is no way in the world that the word “drug” in your sentences is any way “acceptable” for the verb “to drag.”
    Good photos though!!

  7. “Drug” is totally acceptable for the past tense of “drag.” I also like “hung” instead of “hanged” (which I think is incorrect, but sounds better to my ears).

However - “pop” (although indeed a midwestern United Statesian thing to say) sounds horrible to me (there’s something about quasi-onomatopœic words that can sometimes seem a little too yokel), so I made myself use the word “soda” instead once I got to junior high school.

    PS

    English is stupid.
