dollars and some sense

Filed under: japan — John @ 1:23 pm

You’d think— just maybe– that having one kid get up and angrily walk out on you in the middle of class would not make you feel so worthless. It could have been due to a communication problem (the actual reason why is still under investigaton, should find out by 7th period) but I should not have taken it so hard. If students were pennies, then I have about 6 bucks worth of change in my pocket. When I lose a penny, I don’t worry too much because hey, I still have $5.99 left, not to mention that buck-fifty worth of kindergarteners down the street. But students are not pocket change, and despite the admiration from a few hundred other happy human beings, I have been a sucker and let one kid’s troubles bring me down.
Damn.

Update>>> Whatever. It all worked out. I am going to buy a camera tomorrow and lots film. Going to feel better then after I shoot a few rolls.

kevin why you got to be like that?

So again Kevin proves his mad skillz in the friednship arena. I did not have a good day today for reasons that won’t be gotten into here, and the evening was topped off with embarassingly pathetic bout of loneliness- however once I checked my mail things were better. The best part of my day started at about 6:30pm with the discovery of a package in my mailbox, and the discovery of these two dvds in that box. I have talked about the film Arakimentari before. It is a mediocre film about a very interesting subject. Spike Jonze should have been the one to do this, not those hipster kids who include footage of them boozing with Araki during the ending credits.
When they were thinking up ideas I bet it was like:
“Ohh man, you know what would be totally wicked? If I like, was all moving the school’s camcorder around while Araki is photographing those naked chicks! It would all be like, matching his energy!”
“Yeah that’s Rad! Like Reality Tv! and then in between scenes I am gonna splice in some sped up suuuper grainy footage of people crossing streets of shinjuku at night! Whoa thats going to blow so many minds”
“Sweet! Like the travel channel does!”
But then Araki gets in front of the camera (or behind his own) and all is forgiven. It is something that you ought to see and something that I wanted to buy anyways. Don’t let my opinions sway you.

I have not see Gunner’s Palace yet, but I watched the trailers online many a time. Thinking that this will be a good film to watch in my school’s screening room with some other teachers. Arakimentari will not be showing up on school property ever. But I am glad I have it to show to photographer friends who have not seen it yet.

Thank you Kevin. You did it again. I don’t know what it was before* but your awesomeness inspires.

*Actually I do remember– something about a rude clerk in shibuya and a shelf of overpriced skater t-shirts on the floor in a row from the cash register to the door. And poor Makiko being the last one to leave and not knowing what had just happened. Ha Ha Ha

Black Paint, or Chrome?

I think silver is what I will go with. It sticks out more in reflections (like mirrors or windows) which places me in the photo. Also it is only the chrome that has the 0.58 finder which works for me since all I ever shoot with is a 28mm lens.
