Last Sunday I went to a Jr. High recruiting/information fair that was held at the Shinagawa Prince hotel. There were many private Jr high schools from all over Kanagawa, Tokyo, Chiba, and Saitama. I was there to represent for my school- yeah I was the only native english teacher there and I know what might be thought about that. But I like my school and I want to help out. I handed out flyers and pencil cases with my school’s name and number on it. One school was handing out little keychains that had little figures of two anime styled kids dressed in their school’s uniform. Uniforms are a big deal- at 2pm in the large room next door a school uniform fashion show was held. The audience consisted of many parents and their elementary school-aged kids. And then there were the guys with their cameras. A lot of people were taking pictures, I figured that they were the parents of the models- kids who were asked to participatee by their schools. My school had four students up on stage, modeling the summer and winter uniforms. The kids walked down the center aisle, and then about halfway they stopped, and then turned to walk back to the stage. I sat near the point where the kids stopped with my principal. During the presentation, which was hosted by a woman at a podium who commented on the various details and meanings of the outfits, I noticed a guy sitting nearby who without fail took a picture of each and every female student.. His camera seemed to be angled more towards the girls than anyone else. What seemed most out of place was that he lacked any sort of family sitting with him… I’d like to think that he has a daughter at home who could not make it but who knows.
