I’m a gamblin’ man

Filed under: japan — John @ 9:49 am

Getting sick made me realize that it might be time to get insured. I got off easy this time- my fever was quelled with a packet of bitter powder and drinking my weight in pocari sweat. Insurance something that I have not had since I graduated from the university. I have heard that the national health insurance plan in Japan is great and covers almost everything, but the trade off is having to spend over 300 dollars a month on something with no immediate benefits. 30,000 yen is like… 100 rolls of film PLUS another 3000 points on my yodobashi card. Granted, if I got nudged far into a ditch by a car on the way home today that would pretty much be it for me. No amount of photography supplies could help me then, but in this case insurance would be a very good thing. If anyone has any suggestions or ideas feel free to hit the comment button and let me know.

  1. Looks like your going to have to get insured sooner or later anyway!: http://www.gaijinpot.com/health.php
hmm, I don’t really know anything about insurance, but this seems reasonable: http://www.globalhealth.jp/

  2. i dont know how it is for you, but my national health is pretty cheap. they base it off your income from the past year. i dont know how much you pulled workin for senshu but 300 a month seems a bit high for not even half a years work

  3. I think the stuff I am supposed to get through GEOS is basic coverage for something like 80,000 per year, if I remember co-rrectly.
Of course the alternative is just to not get sick.

  5. I have used private health care, including the Global Health Care option mentioned above. It’s fine.
It’s actually not the costs of the national health insurance that will kill you, but the damn pension (of which you can only claim 3 years’ worth back.

  6. You could argue that buying 100 rolls of film also has no immediate benefits.
